It’s no surprise that Hallyu has taken over the world by storm, especially during the pandemic. The Korean wave has become more than a passing trend and has gained a loyal following, KDIS students included! We asked a few of them for some K-content recommendations and here are their suggestions:

Anete Beinarovica (2022 MDP, Latvia)

Music, literature, and art is something that is near and dear to my heart, whether I am in my home country or abroad, and I strongly believe that together they constitute a very profound picture of a society’s way of life, thought process and beliefs. This is among the reasons why I have such a deep appreciation for K-content.

I got into K-content around 2018 – partially thanks to my workplace and partially because ”Fake Love” by BTS was being played so much on different radio stations in Latvia that it immediately stood out and made me want to find out more. My office also closely cooperates with the Embassy of Korea in Latvia so I then had constant exposure and got drawn into the K-world without me even noticing.

As I became more and more interested in Korean culture, I wanted to explore their literatur? as I am a huge book worm. I recently read ”I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokpokki” by Baek Se-hee, and it attracted my attention because of the title, obviously. And while I usually avoid books that even slightly resemble the self-help genre, this one was different. It felt like a therapy session, and I really appreciate the author being so candid and sharing her experience with all of us readers- an experience that many, including myself, have gone through. I highly recommend this book!

Anto Nofianto (MDP 2021, Indonesia)

Ever since I was a child, my family would watch K-dramas, such as Winter Sonata, Stairway to Heaven, and Memories of Bali on the TV every evening. Because of this, I was indirectly introduced to K-content, and I then lost interest in other countries' TV shows as I became accustomed to the uniqueness of K-drama.

Memories of Bali was quite popular in my nation in 2004 because the filming took place there. This drama was memorable for me and my family not only because it portrayed Bali, but because the story was a crazy and chaotic ride that was filled with greed, tears, and misery. It focused on family issues and human relationships, and also presented emotions with logical plot creation. It was a really well-made TV series, and I would recommend it to others too.

K-Dramas appeal to people's hearts rather than their heads, and they are usually about love and family- themes that are common to everyone's life. From the characters, we are able to better understand ourselves and the feelings of others. They teach us the value of family and friends, as well as what happiness is. These days, dramas merge the right balance of truth and imagination in a very innovative way, so that the audience may enter the fantasy realm and think it might happen in the real world as well. Because of this, I highly recommend K-Dramas to everyone.
