Students from three high schools in Sejong City participated in the 2024 Talent Donation Program at KDI School on July 5th.

The Talent Donation Program, an event aimed at fostering knowledge and cultural exchange between KDIS’s international students and local students in Sejong City, is a part of the Summer Talent Volunteering Program. This program includes annual talent donation classes that promote multiculturalism and foster intercultural interaction and harmony in an educational setting.

This year, KDIS was joined by 45 students from Boram High School, Sodam High School, and Haemil High School in Sejong City for the talent donation program. The program featured four KDIS Forums, each hosting subgroups of the students and setting a platform for cultural exchange and raising awareness about global issues. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students, who engaged in various activities designed to inspire and educate. The students participated enthusiastically in the events and activities designed to inspire and educate them.

Human Rights Forum: Freedom and Self-determination

The Human Rights Forum revolved around the theme "Freedom and Self-determination: A Journey of Human Rights." Introducing the concept of freedom to the students, Shazra, one of the forum members and presenters, emphasized,

“Freedom is a multifaceted approach—a concept that resonates differently with every individual, and it is important to understand how it impacts how we thrive in our society.”

Further into the event, the forum featured more presentations and case study activities where students analyzed various human rights issues. Divided into small groups, they discussed and identified key human rights concerns in different cases, demonstrating analytical skills and empathy. Each group shared their findings and proposed actions, highlighting the importance of human rights advocacy.

ASEAN Forum: Soft Power Diplomacy in South Korea

The ASEAN Forum's theme, "ASEAN Soft Power Diplomacy in South Korea," included a blend of cultural and educational activities.

ASEAN students at KDIS- the program facilitators- discussed various aspects of cultural diplomacy and the influence of K-pop in ASEAN countries, as well as the organizations and events that promote cultural exchange between ASEAN and Korea. "K-pop has become a significant cultural bridge between South Korea and ASEAN countries," noted Salsabila, one of the KDIS student presenters.

Traditional games from the Philippines and Indonesia in between the presentations, accompanied by Filipino and Indonesian songs, created a perfect ambiance, providing an interactive environment for high school students to learn about ASEAN cultures.

Students also tried on traditional dress from different ASEAN nations adding extra excitement to the students’ experience. The program concluded on a fun and happy note, leaving participants with a sense of fulfillment and cultural appreciation.

Women Leaders Forum: Gender Inclusive Product Design

The Women Leaders Forum (WLF), focusing on "Gender Inclusive Product Design," explored the theme of gender equality. Sima, a WLF member and presenter, shared insights with the students on how historical events have shaped present-day gender roles. Her presentation highlighted the enduring impact of these historical contexts on society today.

Students were actively involved in hands-on activities that challenged them to think about inclusivity in practical ways. One key activity in the forum was re-designing school uniforms to address gender biases found in case studies. The students collaborated in groups and developed innovative uniform designs to promote equality and inclusivity- an effective exercise encouraging students to apply their understanding of gender issues to real-world scenarios.

KDIS-African Development Forum: Multiculturalism and Diversity

The KDIS-African Development Forum explored "Multiculturalism, Diversity, and the Potential of the African Continent." Presentations highlighted the diverse cultures and potential of the African continent, with discussions focusing on both challenges and opportunities for the continent, enhancing cultural understanding and cooperation between Africa and South Korea.

The 2024 Talent Donation Program at KDI School concluded successfully, offering the students a platform to explore diverse cultures, engage with global issues, and develop critical thinking. In our interconnected world, this program is an initiative to foster dialogue and understanding, reminding us that today’s efforts plant the seeds for tomorrow’s global citizens. We plan to continue making a difference and look forward to meeting more of Sejong’s high school students in 2025!
