Sports Day 2006

Sports day is an important event at the KDI School. It is a day for all faculty, students, and staff to move away from classrooms and offices and onto an athletic field. Teams were assigned based upon academic programs with a separate team also for staff and faculty.

The day started with an eight-legged race that was divided into 3 rounds with 3 groups of staff, MPP students, and MBA students. Although the other teams pursued them closely, the victory eventually fell to the MBA team in the final race. Moving on to dodge ball, each team of 30 players had an opportunity to engage each other more intimately. Sipkova Martina (MBA) showed off her skills with her strong and precise throws, smartly picking off her opponents on the field. After 20 minutes, Inthavong Khodpangna (MPP) was the only survivor on MPP team. However, he kept his team alive by catching the ball and eliminating MBA team players until finally being knocked out by a well placed volley by Ms. Martina. If the MBA students were proud of Martina, Inthavong was the MVP for the MPP.

The day moved on to soccer, and as players took the pitch, each side received much cheer and applause from their teammates. Program specific cheers resonated throughout the match, and teams had a loud and loyal base of fans encouraging them from the sidelines. The MPP team challenged the MBA team in the first match, which eventually went to the MBA team. The MBA squad followed the game with a friendly against the faculty-staff team. Making a special guest appearance, President Hyun Jung Taik of the KDI School, along with many other faculty members and staff, all enthusiastically took part in the game. Although they played a competitive match, the skills of some star players eventually led the MBA team to a win once again.

The games were followed by an outdoor BBQ with traditional Korean meat, side dishes, and beverages. After a hearty lunch, the sports resumed with cock-fighting, and teams tried their best to knock people to the ground while hopping on one foot. Teams then took sides to pull for a tug-of-war, which ended in victory for the MPP students. The program moved on to kickball and a large victory for the staff. A running relay was the last competition, and each group prepared a team of eight runners for a 1km course. Professor Sang-moon surprised everyone with his cunning speed, however Captain You Sub Park also turned out a fine performance and led the MBA students to the final victory.

In all, it was a wonderful day for the entire school to enjoy a day of sports, good food, and good company.

Student Club Activities

The student clubs of the KDI School have been actively meeting during the semester.

Having 37 members, the Taewondo club is the largest in size, and club members gather every Wednesday and Friday to exercise together. Club members are very proud of their club and uniform, and hope to plan a Taewondo competition in the near future.

Yoga club members also meet to exercise and stretch through a variety of postures. Each session teaches new techniques and trains its member to breathe through their abdomen to lessen their stress and fatigue.

The “All That China” club is for students who wish to learn more about China and its culture. The group also studies the Chinese language collectively every Tuesday evening.

The tennis club also meets every Friday morning and offers tennis lessons to new members. On May 19, the club participated in the 2006 KDI School Dean’s Cup Tennis Tournament, held at the school tennis courts. The Dean, chairs of the MBA and MPP programs, and club members all participated in a series of knockout matches. The trophy winners this year were You Sub Park and Hyun Kuk Lee. The tournament is held twice a year for a day of cordial competition between the faculty and students.

Jeolabuk-do Province Tour
