Every encounter brings us memories of different kinds. There are the ones which we will always treasure forever, be they the sweetest ones, perhaps a little more on the bitter side or even just plain bittersweet. When a person first starts out on a journey, they set out with a specific goal for the future in their mind's eye. Yet when the journey has come to an end, we find ourselves taking a trip down memory lane. Dian Amru Damanik from Indonesia came to KDI School in Fall 2021, with a goal of earning a Master's degree in Public Policy. Dian has shared his journey with many whom he refers to as friends, family and colleagues. In this interview, we'll hear more from Dian about himself and his journey of a year studying at KDI School.

Hi Dian, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit more about yourself?

Hi, I'm Dian. I'm from Indonesia, I came to KDI School to do an MPP program starting in the Fall semester 2021 and just graduated this Summer semester, August 2022. I was one of the Hyundai scholarship awardees joining the TI and SD cohorts in my study program.

What was your occupation or background before coming to KDI School?

Before coming to KDI School, I worked for the Ministry of Industry based in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. Originally, my background was actually as an industrial engineer, but more recently I've been working for the Ministry as a negotiator for international cooperation in industry between Indonesia and its partner countries.

Why did you choose to study at KDI School?

Initially, I'd heard great things about KDI School from my boss and work colleagues. They're actually all KDI School alumni, and so were keen to recommend that I study here. As a public official, I've found that KDI School is one of the best places to study public policy. I really wanted to improve my academic knowledge and skills, especially in the field of international trade and industrial policy.

Can you tell us more about your country? What is special about it?

Indonesia is a truly multicultural country. Historically and right up to the present day, we've always had a rich diversity in terms of cultures, ethnic groups, religions, languages, and local wisdom that blend harmoniously together. Indonesia itself is quite unique with our geunine warm welcome and authentic hospitality, making it an interesting experience for visitors. We also have many beautiful places, mountains and beaches to visit as well as the delicious spicy foods that are well worth to try.

How was your learning experience at KDI school throughout your studies here?

I learned so much priceless knowledge and gained incredible experience from the amazing lecturers and the other learners at KDI School. Enrolling at KDI school was not only about the academic studies aspect, but also for building my network and connections with a lot of people from all over the world who shared many wonderful different perspectives and ideas. Regarding the curriculum, I'd say without hestiation that KDI School has the very best courses on offer that are highly attuned to enable us, the students, to learn and upskill ourselves to be the future leaders in our respective countries.

For you, what is the most memorable course and activities at KDI School?

During my study time at KDI School, I really admired the way our Professors taught and shared their knowledge and experiences with us. My favorite courses were the Negotiation classes led by Prof Kim Dong-Young and Industrial Policy with Prof Lim Wonhyuk. I mention these specifically because both served to open my eyes and encouraged me to keep learning. Beside the courses, at KDI School we also have amazing clubs such as the hiking club that gave us the opportunity to go out on some memorable hikes all round Sejong city. Another occasion that I fondly recall is when KDI School held a remarkable Song and Dance festival that gave every student and staff member the opportunity to participate with their various talents and hobbies.
