“The Home Visiting+ Program opened doors and gave students a real taste of Korean life beyond school.”
Have you ever wondered what life in a Korean home is truly like? For international students at KDI School, the 2025 Spring Home Visiting+ Program answered that question, and more, by offering a warm, authentic glimpse into Korean culture beyond the classroom. Revamped to run during the semester and broaden participation, this cultural exchange initiative created new bonds, shared traditions, and brought people together in meaningful and joyful ways.
Through home visits, local trips, and shared meals, both guests and hosts walked away with deeper intercultural understanding, fresh perspectives, and lasting friendships. Through their stories, a vivid picture emerges of cross-cultural relations, shared adventures, and the joy of discovering new perspectives together.
Experiencing Korea from the Inside Out
For Priscilla Ayapan (MPP, 2024) from Guatemala, the idea of seeing what everyday life looks like inside a Korean home was the main draw. “The idea behind the program was really interesting,” she explained. “I wanted to experience a real Korean home, so this program was a great opportunity for me.”
Her most memorable moment took place during a trip to Suwon. “When we were arriving, someone asked our Korean friend what her favorite place in Suwon was, and she replied, ‘I haven’t been here in almost ten years.’ We all laughed, it was a great moment of shared discovery,” Priscilla said.
Similarly, Amogelang Moyo (MPM, 2024) from Botswana, an international student with a passion for Korean culture, took the opportunity to explore Korean life beyond campus. “I find Korean culture very relatable, especially the language with its emphasis on respect and honorifics,” she shared. “So, I saw this as a golden opportunity to connect more personally with Korean culture, not just study it academically.”
Discovering Culture through Everyday Moments
Each student highlighted different aspects of Korean culture that left a strong impression. For Priscilla, the program offered her a new lens: “Korean culture is really complex and interesting. This experience helped me understand and appreciate it more deeply.”
For Amogelang, the learning came through food and tradition. “My host served my favorite dish, samgyeopsal, and I learned about the historical roots of Korea’s communal dining culture. It was inspiring to witness that sense of togetherness firsthand. And we ended the night playing traditional Korean games like Yut-Nori, it was such a fun time!”
The Feeling of Home Away from Home
Despite the unfamiliar setting, the students described a profound sense of warmth and welcome. “Our Korean friend went above and beyond to make us feel at home,” said Priscilla. “It was truly a ‘home away from home’ experience.”
Amogelang echoed this sentiment: “I felt like I was with family. That sense of belonging, even in a foreign country, reminded me how powerful hospitality and human connection can be.”
Behind the Scenes: A Host’s Perspective
Chaeah Song (MDP, 2025), a Korean student who hosted two Latin American participants, joined the program out of a natural love for planning and connecting with others. “When I found out I could organize a fun overnight trip and the school would even support it, I couldn’t resist!” she said.
Chaeah organized a weekend getaway to Boryeong, a coastal city filled with history, charm, and seafood. “We visited a historic fortress, explored the beach, and enjoyed grilled clams, a classic Korean seaside dish,” she laughed, “but it was delicious nonetheless.”
The most meaningful part for her? “Getting to know new friends outside of class and seeing them enjoy the activities I planned. Even the stressful moments, like when we missed a bus, made the experience more memorable. It reminded me how much I enjoy making others feel welcome.”
Her interaction with the guests also led to personal reflection. “Explaining Korean culture to them made me realize how limited my own view of Korea was. Seeing things through their eyes gave me a new appreciation for everyday life here.”
Lasting Impressions and Strong Recommendations
When asked whether they would recommend the program, all three students responded with an enthusiastic yes. “It helped me understand Korean culture and connect with other students,” said Priscilla. “If you have the chance, take it.”
Amogelang added, “This program gives you a window into the heart of Korean life. It’s not just tourism, it’s something deeper. These are the kind of memories that stay with you.”
Chaeah also expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “I’d definitely do it again, unless I get too busy. I’m really thankful to the school for making this possible.”
The 2025 Spring Home Visiting+ Program was more than a cultural initiative, it was a bridge that connected hearts and minds across borders. As international and Korean students came together to share stories, meals, and adventures, they discovered that cultural exchange isn’t just about learning new customs; it’s about forming meaningful human connections that enrich the experience of studying abroad. At KDI School, these connections are what turn a good semester into an unforgettable one. Don’t miss out on hosting or participating in the program during your time at KDI School!
