What is the G20 Global Leadership Program?

The G20 Global Leadership Program was inaugurated during the G20 summit in 2010. The primary objectives of the program are to gather experienced development practitioners from all over the world, particularly from developing countries, with diverse backgrounds and offer them extensive training on issues related to the G20 agenda in general and Korea’s Development experience in particular, which enable them to contribute towards reaching the G20 development goals set forth at the Seoul Summit. The program also aims to enhance the participants’ ability to contribute to economic growth and to drive momentum to realize an actual change in their countries. Indeed, the Korean government made this program possible as a vital part of its contribution to the G20 Seoul Development Consensus for Shared Growth - “to add value to and complement existing development commitments.”

Since 2010, the KDI School of Public Policy and Management has been hosting the G20 Global Leadership Program. It is in line with the long-term vision of the school, aiming to produce future leaders capable of coping with unprecedented changes in today’s world and exercising global leadership in their respective spheres of influence.

How the program was conducted?

This year’s (2022) G20 global leadership program is divided into two main parts, the first part of the program has been conducted as a blended, using online and offline methodology between 27th April- June 10, 2022. The topics covered during the online course were including but not limited to “United Nation and Global Governance”, “Strategies of National Development in the 4th Industrial revolution”, “Gender equality and Women’s leadership”, and other topics related to the global changes in healthcare, energy, climate change, and technology. The second part of the program is field study/tripe which will take place between July and October, 2022, during which the participants will be able to witness development dynamics of the Korea and also they will be able to experience cultural diversity in the country. For example, in 2021, the participants visited Gyeongiu tower in Gyeongju and POSCO in Pohang.

The content of the program was mainly related to the G20 issues as well as Development dynamics of Korea, which enables the young leaders to understand issues deeply and to develop pragmatic policy solutions. Every lecture during the program was followed by knowledge-sharing and Q&A activity session that require the active contribution of participants, given their professional and academic backgrounds. Likewise, the offline field study is designed to optimize opportunities for participants to engage in in-depth discussions with the government officials, development practitioners, and fellow G20 participants, as well as participate in activities outside the classroom that can build upon their online/classroom learnings.

Who were the Participant?

This year, 2022, the G-20 Global Leadership Program was hosted 79 participants from 45 countries all over the world, including India, Indonesia, Kenya, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Brazil. The participants have extensive work experience related to development issues and are currently serving or working as a leader, change agent, or facilitator in promoting global development or on G20 matters.

In previous years, participants have reported a high level of satisfaction with the program. The result of the satisfaction survey for 2021 shows that the overall quality of the program was scored 4.48 out of 5.0 for the host organization (KDIS), and administrative support during the program was scored 4.92 out of 5.

Therefore, if you are looking for a comprehensive and practice-based leadership training program, and you are willing to contribute to the issues related to the G20 issues around the world, particularly in your country, do not hesitate to apply for next year’s session. KDI School of Public Policy and Management always encourages current students, alumni’s to take every opportunity that is offered by the School.  Remember to follow KDI School’s official Facebook page for updates (https://www.facebook.com/KDISofficial) and for the updates always take a look at KDIS official website ( https://www.kdischool.ac.kr/).
