Cheongju City, known for its fascinating blend of ancient and modern Korean history, recently played host to an exciting field trip organized for KDIS students. The trip, which took place on April 14th, marked the final excursion of the 2023 Spring semester, leaving participants with cherished memories and a deeper understanding of Korean culture. Notably, the event caught the attention of a local TV station, capturing the essence of the trip for a wider audience!

The highlight of the journey was a visit to two prominent locations: Cheong Nam Dae and the Munui Cultural Properties Site. Both destinations offered unique insights into the historical and cultural heritage of Cheongju and its surrounding region.

Cheong Nam Dae, aptly named "Cheong Wa Dae in a warm southern land," served as a private villa for former Korean presidents. Stepping foot into this prestigious residence, the students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the lives of past leaders. Kimberlyn Pascoe said “I gained a firsthand understanding of how important decisions and plans were made within the walls of Cheong Nam Dae, providing a fascinating glimpse into the country's governance”.

Complementing the presidential villa experience, the field trip continued to the Munui Cultural Properties Site. This location served as an ideal setting to explore the traditional culture and local lifestyle of Chungcheongbuk-do. From ancient artifacts to immersive displays, the students delved into the rich heritage of the region, gaining a deeper appreciation for its customs and traditions.

Abdikarim Abdullahi Mohamed said “I must say, the excursion was truly transformative. It offered us a chance to grow personally and engage in meaningful cultural exchanges. We had the opportunity to interact with the local community, and let me tell you, it was an eye-opening experience. Seeing the preservation of cultural assets firsthand made a profound impact on all of us. I can confidently say that this journey has left an indelible mark on each participant”.

What made this field trip even more special was the presence of a local TV crew. They captured the excitement, enthusiasm, and joy shared by the KDI students as they explored Cheongju's historical treasures. The TV coverage will undoubtedly help spread awareness about the city's cultural significance and showcase the students' engagement with Korean heritage to a broader audience.

As the Spring semester drew to a close, this memorable field trip provided an ideal culmination of the students' academic journey. The combination of historical exploration, cultural immersion, and the unique opportunity to be featured on local broadcasting TV made it an experience that will forever remain etched in their hearts.

KDIS students expressed their gratitude to the KDI School for meticulously planning the Cheongju City Tour. “I was delighted to have a chance to participate in such an enriching experience, broadening their horizons and deepening their connection with Korean history”, mentioned Emmanuel Roy Aquino, one of the KDIS students of Master of Public Policy.

As another successful field trip concludes, KDI students eagerly await future adventures and opportunities to continue their exploration of Korea's diverse cultural heritage. The Spring Cheongju City Tour will undoubtedly serve as a cherished memory and a testament to the importance of experiential learning in shaping well-rounded global citizens.
