“Turning an idea into an award-winning story of global connection.”

In June 2025, KOICA launched its annual YouTube Contest for SP Fellows, designed to promote the strengths and achievements of the KOICA Scholarship Program and showcase the vibrant experiences of international students in Korea. Among this year’s enthusiastic participants were Elena Dimas from El Salvador and Sofía Narváez from Ecuador, both Master’s in Development Policy (MDP) students at KDI School. Their collaborative video offered a glimpse into the transformative journey of KOICA fellows and the unique academic environment at KDI School. Their creativity and hard work earned them Second Place in the group category of the contest.

For Sofía (MDP, 2024), the motivation to join the contest stemmed from a strong desire to share the remarkable opportunities KOICA provides to public servants worldwide. “Through its scholarship program, KOICA empowers professionals to strengthen their knowledge and skills, fostering innovation and critical thinking,” she explained. Highlighting Korea’s rapid economic development and leadership in technology and innovation, Sofía wanted the video to reflect how this experience enriches the academic and professional growth of fellows.

She also saw the contest as an opportunity to showcase KDI School’s mission. “Our program on Sustainable Regional Development encourages students to examine complex socio-economic issues through both theoretical and practical frameworks,” she said. “It prepares professionals to contribute to development policy-making and fosters expertise in official development assistance.”

For Elena (MDP, 2024), the inspiration was deeply personal. “Studying at KDI School through the KOICA program has been life-changing,” she shared. “We wanted more people to see the academic excellence and the supportive, diverse community we are part of.” Both participants emphasized that their time at KDIS has shaped their message of growth and transformation. “KDI School is not just about studying; it’s about becoming better versions of ourselves,” Elena added.

The creative process, however, was not without challenges. “Time was our biggest challenge,” Elena admitted. “We had limited time to brainstorm, shoot, and edit the video.” Despite the tight schedule, the duo worked tirelessly, often editing late at night and reshooting scenes to ensure quality. Sofía recalled, “The most difficult part was editing, bringing all the ideas together into a final product. But we had amazing teamwork and, most importantly, enjoyed every step of the process.”

A key element in their success was the support of friends who contributed to the filming and helped bring the project to life. “Their help made a huge difference. It really showed the sense of community at KDI School,” they said.

Their video highlights what makes KDI School different from other KOICA partner universities  KOICA partner universities. “KDIS was created to develop leaders in public policy and management, equipping mid-level professionals to become global leaders,” Sofía explained. “It leverages the research and resources of the Korea Development Institute, one of the most influential think tanks in economics, to share Korea’s development experience with the international community.”

Elena echoed this sentiment, noting that their video showcased KDI School’s dynamic and inclusive environment. “Students from all over the world come together here to share knowledge, support each other, and grow. The school is very student-centered, which makes it unique. We also highlighted how the KOICA program integrates not only academically but socially and culturally into life at KDI School.”

When asked what advice they would give to future KOICA fellows, both participants stressed the importance of embracing opportunities. “Take advantage of every initiative that KOICA and KDI School offer, whether it’s leadership activities, cultural exchanges, or creative projects like this one,” Sofía recommended. Elena added, “Believe in yourself and your ideas. Even if you’re just one or two people, trust your potential. Enjoy the process and remember why you started.”

The 2025 KOICA YouTube Contest not only gave Sofía and Elena the chance to express their creativity but also reinforced their commitment to sharing knowledge and building bridges across cultures. Their story reflects the essence of KOICA’s mission, empowering leaders to create sustainable solutions for global development, and KDI School’s vision of shaping policy leaders who will make a difference in the world.
