“This was memorable experience, we were warmly hosted by Dean Joon-Kyung Kim and his wife”

Winter in Korea is not just cold - it is sometimes a nightmare for some people. The unbearable cold, white of snow, and the freezing weather often lead people to stay at their homes - leaving a quiet atmosphere outside. The wind cuts through layers of coats, the streets grow quieter, and warmth feels like a rare luxury.

However, in the middle of the freezing season, KDI School offered something that is more precious than a thick jacket or heated room, it is human warmth through a home visiting program. Home visiting program is a program designed where Korean host families can introduce the Korean culture and modern family lifestyles to international students, while at the same time learn more about the traditions of international students. Korean faculty, staff, and students open up their homes to international students to provide a memorable experience. For hosts and international students alike, this program is a great way to boost global competency and form bonds outside of the classroom.

What made the 2025 Home Visiting Program more special was particularly the participation of Dean Joon-Kyung Kim as a Korean Host. In the midst of the cold weather, his participation has reflected that KDI School will always commit to provide inclusive learning opportunities not only in the classroom but also through culture. His participation embodied school spirit and added a layer of warmth to international students.

Donn Bertis (MDP student from the Philippines), Chifundo Mkombe (MPP student from Malawi), Gabriela Herrera Lengua (MPP student from Peru) are the lucky students who can learn Korean culture with Dean Joon. We met Donn and Chifundo for sharing their remarkable experiences during the home visiting program with Dean Joon-Kyung Kim.
How was your experience joining the home visiting program and traveling to other cities in Korea?
Donn: Joining the home visiting program was a truly enriching and memorable experience. We were warmly hosted by the Dean and his wife, who generously welcomed us into their beautiful home in Seoul and guided us on a visit to the National Museum of Korea.

This experience allowed me to go beyond being a mere visitor and offered a more personal and authentic glimpse into some aspects of Korean life. Visiting the National Museum of Korea deepened my appreciation of the country’s rich history, culture, and heritage, particularly through the significant national treasures on display. Being welcomed into our host’s home made the experience even more meaningful, as it provided a rare opportunity to observe everyday Korean life and traditions up close, fostering a deeper cultural connection.
Chifundo: We began with coffee, during which we had the opportunity to get to know the Dean on a more personal level. He is a man deeply passionate about the Republic of Korea and its economic transformation, and listening to him was both inspiring and enlightening.
Afterwards, we visited the National Museum of Korea, where we learned about the country’s rich and fascinating history. We explored the different dynasties: from the Gojoseon Kingdom, the Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, and Gaya), Unified Silla, Balhae, the Goryeo Dynasty, the Joseon Dynasty, to the Korean Empire. We also saw iconic attractions such as the Room of Quiet Contemplation and the impressive Ten-Story Stone Pagoda(a massive 13.5 meter tall marble pagoda from the Goryeo Dynasty 1348).
What was the most meaningful or memorable moment you experienced during this program?

Donn: One of the most meaningful moments of the program was the dinner at the Dean’s house, where his wife prepared a sumptuous meal featuring traditional Korean dishes. From the carefully prepared food to the thoughtful Korean souvenirs, the warmth and generosity of our hosts made us feel genuinely welcomed and valued. Spending time together watching a Korean drama further created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, while allowing us to experience an authentic and beloved aspect of Korean culture firsthand. It was likewise an honor to give our hosts simple souvenirs from the Philippines, allowing them to experience a piece of my culture as well.
What made this experience especially memorable was that we were hosted by none other than the Dean himself. Having the rare opportunity to interact with the head of KDIS on such a personal level was truly an honor. Listening to his vision for KDIS and his commitment to continually improving the student experience was deeply inspiring and left a lasting impression on me.

Chifundo: What makes this journey memorable because It was my first time traveling to Seoul, and alone. That in itself was an experience. From boarding the train for the first time to navigating a city far more crowded than Sejong, everything felt new. But, the Home Visit experience turned out to be truly exceptional. It pushed me out of my shell in ways I didn’t expect. I was privileged to be one of three students invited to visit the Dean’s home, what a lovely couple they are. And that what made the program more memorable!
What did you learn about Korean culture and society through this home visiting experience?
Donn: Through this home visiting experience, I gained a deeper appreciation of Korean culture, particularly its strong emphasis on hospitality and respect. I learned how Korea’s rich history and traditions continue to shape modern society, evident in both cultural landmarks and everyday life.

The engaging and insightful exchanges between our Korean hosts and fellow students from Malawi and Peru highlighted the diversity of our customs and traditions while also revealing shared values such as respect and love for family, and a universal love for food. This meaningful interaction broadened my cultural understanding, fostered mutual respect, and strengthened cross-cultural friendships, making the experience both educational and personally enriching.
Chifundo: From the program, I truly enjoyed learning about Korean history, its economic transformation through the Dean’s lived experience, and the warmth of the family time we shared in his home. Every moment was exceptional and deeply memorable. This is an experience I trust I will talk about for a long time to come.
