More Than Just a Language Class: Finding Confidence, Culture, and Connection at KDIS

What happens when a classroom lesson moves into real life? For Ahmed Mohammed Abdirasak, it meant standing in a small neighbourhood grocery store, stumbling through Korean phrases, and laughing through every mistake, a moment that would come to define his experience in the Korean Language and Culture (KLC) class at KDI School.

Mohammed, an MPP student from Somalia, did not expect that a language class would leave such a lasting impression on his first semester at KDI School. What began as a simple intention, to learn how to communicate in a new language, gradually unfolded into something far more meaningful. From the very first class, it became clear that the KLC course was not merely about words or grammar, but about stepping into unfamiliar spaces, embracing discomfort, and finding connection in the most unexpected moments.

“It always started with energy and laughter,” he recalled. “It never felt stressful, it just felt natural.”

That welcoming atmosphere carried into one of the course’s most distinctive assignments: recording a real-life interaction in Korean. For Mohammed, stepping into a grocery store and speaking the language outside the classroom was both exciting and intimidating. “I was curious, but also nervous,” he said. “I had never spoken Korean in a real situation before.”

With his friend behind the camera, what followed was a series of repeated attempts, forgotten words, hesitant sentences, and restarts that quickly turned into laughter. “It was harder than I expected,” he admitted, “but every mistake made it funnier.”

What began as a simple assignment soon became something more meaningful, a moment of growth, confidence, and shared experience.

Beyond the classroom, the course offered immersive cultural exposure, including a visit to the Korean Folk Village. Yet for Mohammed, it was often the simplest, most interactive moments that left the strongest impression. “The games we played in class were my favourite,” he said. “They brought everyone together.”

Through these shared experiences, structural lessons, cultural exploration, and spontaneous laughter, the class became more than just a course. It became a space for connection. “It was not only about learning Korean.” Mohammed also reflected. “It helped me connect with people. Some of the friends I made in that class are now my closest friends at KDIS.” That sense of connection was shaped in part by the class's welcoming atmosphere. As he shared, “Professor Lee HyunJung made the class feel very welcoming, and that made it easier for us to participate and learn without pressure.”

His story reflects a broader reality of life at KDI School. While students arrive in pursuit of academic excellence, they often find something equally valuable along the way: a sense of community, moments of discovery, and connections that cross cultures and backgrounds.

Through the Share Your Story contest, these experiences are given a voice, not as isolated moments, but as reflections of a shared journey. Mohammed’s journey is one of many, yet it highlights a shared truth: that education at KDIS extends far beyond lectures and assignments. It unfolds in everyday moments, whether in a classroom filled with laughter, a cultural site rich with history, or even a small grocery store where language, courage and connection come together. In the end, what students carry with them is not only knowledge, but the experiences that make learning truly meaningful.
