At the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, where English serves as the primary language of instruction, international students are embracing the Korean language as an essential part of their experience. Driven by curiosity, cultural interest, and a desire for deeper integration, many actively engage in learning Korean!

As part of the Korean language studies, 47 students from the KLC I, KLC II, and “Korean Proficiency through TV Drama and Movie” courses at the KDI School participated in a field trip to Suwon city. Organized by Professor Lee Hyung Jung, this field trip became an important part of the educational process, allowing the students to step outside the classroom and experience Korean culture in a lively, engaging way!

Taking a break from the stacks of textbooks and notes, we buckled up and headed to Suwon city - a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity. The starting point of the field trip was an introduction to traditional Korean archery. Against the backdrop of the majestic Hwaseong Fortress, participants were able to try their hand at this ancient art and understand its historical significance. Under the guidance of instructors, the students mastered basic archery techniques, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of a past where mastery of the bow was considered not only a military skill but also an essential element of cultural and intellectual development.

The participants then donned traditional hanboks, filling the streets of Suwon with vibrant colors and a sense of historical continuity. Strolling through the city in traditional attire allowed students to feel a deeper connection to Korean culture. As part of the program, the groups also visited a traditional teahouse, where they learned about Korean tea and experienced the calm and reflective atmosphere of tea culture.

At the end of the day what we did not plan but definitely enjoyed was a martial arts performance in front of the Haenggung palace in Suwon! Broadening our understanding of the country's cultural diversity, martial arts took our breath away and once again proved how amazingly history can be brought back to life.

The special significance of this trip is the reflection of the international students' genuine interest in the Korean language and culture - students actively strive to learn Korean, seizing every opportunity for practice and cultural immersion. Let’s see what our students share about their experience below.

How do such cultural events influence your understanding of Korea?

ERDEMJARGAL Altjin (2025 MDP, Mongolia):

One of the major strengths of KDI School is the wide range of cultural opportunities it offers to students. Each semester, numerous events are organized that allow students to experience Korean culture in meaningful ways. These events go beyond textbook knowledge by providing direct exposure to Korean traditions, social norms, and values. As a result, I can better understand Korea by participating in activities and experiencing the culture directly.

TYULYUBAYEVA Ayaulym (2026 MPP, Kazakhstan)

This trip had a profound influence on my understanding of language and culture! Now I know many more traditions and customs. Also, I started to understand Korean trends better.

MAERAST Thyara Aisyah (2026 MPP, Indonesia):

As a student with budget constraints, it can be difficult to explore cultural experiences outside campus. So having these events provided by the school really helps me a lot. Through these opportunities, I can still experience Korean culture, interact with others, and learn new things without worrying too much about the cost. It may seem small, but for me, it makes a big difference in helping me understand Korea better and enjoy my time here.”

The trip to Suwon clearly demonstrates the importance of the practical component in language learning. Live interaction with the cultural environment strengthens language skills while fostering a deeper understanding of the country in which students are studying. Initiatives such as these highlight KDI School's commitment to developing globally minded professionals open to intercultural dialogue and new knowledge.
