Urban and Real Estate Economics Field Trip Explores Sejong City's Sustainable Infrastructure

On June 22, students enrolled in the Urban and Real Estate Economics course, taught by Professor Sunwoong Kim, participated in a field trip to two of Sejong City's major environmental infrastructure facilities: the Water Quality Restoration Center and the Resource Recovery Center. The visit, attended by approximately 13 students, provided an opportunity to observe how essential public infrastructure supports sustainable urban development and complements the concepts discussed in class.

The field trip was designed to bridge theory and practice by exposing students to the systems that manage two of the most fundamental urban services—wastewater treatment and solid waste management. Through guided tours and presentations by facility staff, students gained firsthand insight into the economic, environmental, and technological considerations involved in operating these critical public utilities.

The first stop was the Water Quality Restoration Center, where students learned about the complete wastewater treatment process, from the collection of sewage to the release of treated water back into the environment. Facility staff explained the multiple stages of treatment and emphasized the importance of maintaining high water quality standards to protect public health and surrounding ecosystems.

In addition to learning about the treatment process, students were introduced to the center's efforts to improve energy efficiency. Staff explained how the facility recovers and utilizes energy to operate its heating system during the winter months, illustrating how environmental infrastructure can reduce energy consumption while maintaining stable operations throughout the year. The visit demonstrated that modern wastewater treatment facilities not only protect water resources but also incorporate sustainable technologies that lower operational costs and environmental impacts.

The group then visited the Resource Recovery Center, where they explored Sejong City's integrated approach to waste management. Rather than simply disposing of municipal waste, the facility focuses on recovering valuable resources and maximizing the efficient use of materials and energy. Students observed how waste is collected, processed, and managed using advanced technologies designed to reduce landfill dependence and support environmental sustainability.

Throughout the tour, facility staff emphasized the importance of resource recovery in building sustainable cities and highlighted the role that efficient waste management plays in supporting both environmental protection and economic development. Students were able to see firsthand how public investment in infrastructure contributes to cleaner urban environments while creating long-term economic and environmental benefits.

For students in the Urban and Real Estate Economics course, the field trip reinforced many of the topics explored throughout the semester, including public infrastructure investment, urban service provision, environmental externalities, and sustainable city planning. Observing these facilities in operation provided valuable context for understanding the economic principles behind urban infrastructure and the policy decisions required to manage growing cities effectively.

By visiting two of Sejong City's essential public facilities, students gained a deeper appreciation of the complex systems that often operate behind the scenes of everyday urban life. The experience demonstrated how thoughtful planning, technological innovation, and public investment work together to create more sustainable and resilient cities, while highlighting the practical applications of the concepts studied in the classroom.
