Life is a series of transitions, a constant movement from one phase to the next, from the familiar to the unknown. As the song goes, “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end”. The phrase perfectly captures the essence of this continuous cycle, emphasizing the interconnected nature of our experiences and the ongoing evolution of our life journey. It signifies not only growth but also the pursuit of new opportunities and knowledge. Like a flower shedding its bud to bloom, we, too, must release the past to fully embrace the endless possibilities that the future holds.

In celebration of the students’ graduation, on December 8, 2023, KDI School, through the Student Affairs Division, held this year’s post-graduation celebration -The KDIS Winter Solstice 2023. Dean Jong-Il You joined the event, and he opened the event by sending a congratulatory message to all the students who finished their courses this year. Students had fun with the group games, karaoke contest and the contest for the “Best Winter Outfit”, which allowed them to reminisce about all the fun of student life with their classmates and friends. It was a celebration of success, friendships and new beginnings represented by the Winter Solstice phenomenon.

The winter solstice signifies the precise moment when half of the Earth is tilted farthest away from the sun, typically occurring on either December 21 or 22 at the exact same second worldwide. This event marks the shortest day and the onset of winter in the astronomical calendar. During this period, we encounter the earliest sunrise and longer nights, and in this event can symbolize the commencement of opportunities and the enduring connections and bonds formed during our academic journey. Just as the winter solstice where the new season heralds the dawn of opportunities, the graduation marks the closing of the 2023 chapter and a celebration of success, and the anticipation of new beginnings for everyone.

As we toss our caps into the air, we are not just commemorating the completion of a chapter but also announcing the commencement of a new one. The academic journey, filled with both challenges and triumphs, serves as a solid foundation for the opportunities and victories awaiting in the broader world. The conclusion of student life opens doors to a diverse range of possibilities, enabling individuals to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the pursuit of their dreams.

For the graduating students, this “Happy Hour” is the culmination of the long nights of academic work and the friendships that were built in the school. When I asked them about what they will miss the from their KDIS experience, some of the graduates shared their thoughts:

Sarath Roeurng, MPP Student from Cambodia, shared that he will definitely “miss the camaraderie and genuine bonds” among the students that have been an integral part of his student journey in KDIS.

Anggie Aditya Murti, MDP Student from Indonesia said “The people here are truly remarkable. Their warmth towards me despite our cultural differences has been unparalleled. It feels like a tight-knit family; we laughed, cried and created lasting memories together. I will surely treasure these memories forever”.

For Khin Thindar Zin, MPM Student from Myanmar, the places that she will miss are the library and the cafeteria: “I enjoyed studying with friends most of the time there. Whenever I face difficulties in my studies, I go there and discuss things with my friends”.

Graduations stand as poignant reminders that our life journey is an ongoing cycle of growth, transformation, and renewal. By understanding and appreciating the intricate dance of beginnings and ends, we can approach the unknown with anticipation, understanding that behind every closing door lies a world of countless possibilities.
