Implementation of Nationwide Social Distancing: Level 2 and Compulsory Mask-Wearing

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased recently, nationwide social distancing practices at level 2 has been implemented since Aug. 23 to prevent further spread of the virus.

 

Under the enhanced guidelines, high-risk facilities, including karaoke rooms, clubs, PC cafes and buffets, have been ordered to shut down. Also, only online religious services are permitted. Also, Sejong City issued a mandatory order for all residents and visitors in Sejong City to wear face masks indoors (including all types of transportation) and outdoors, starting Aug. 24 and will be in effect until further notice. Those breaking the rule will face a fine of up to 100,000 won. The grace period ends on Oct. 13.

South Korea announced 441 new cases on August 27, with the total caseload at 18,706, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Korea’s health authorities are speeding up their discussions on whether to raise social distancing measures to level 3, which is the highest level.
