For four days in August, sixty-three students took part in the annual Korea Field Research Study (KFRS).  This unforgettable experience provided the perfect complement to the theoretical learning and classroom discussions the students have had in the past two semesters at the KDI School.  This year’s itinerary included industrial visits to Hankook Chinaware, Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Heavy Industries, Wolsung Nuclear Power Plant, and POSCO facilities, which were supplemented with cultural tours at the temples of Bulguksa and Seokguram, the underwater tomb and ancient tombs in Cheonmachong, Gyeongju National Museum and other heritage sites.  All the activities proved to be memorable and awe-inspiring for the participants, with some sharing their experiences as follows:

HUONG MINH NGOC HOANG (2012 MDP, Viet Nam)
I had the most amazing time in the field trip with the perfect combination of activities, knowledge, fun, relaxation, good food, friendship and smiles! I couldn''t believe how close I could get to a Korean daily life as well as famous brand names such as POSCO and Hyundai in only 4 days! I will carry this impression about South Korea’s heroic economic ascent as a template for success in my heart.

AIZHAN KOCHONOVA (2012 MDP, Kyrgyzstan)
Along with the requisite visits to Korean companies and cultural heritage sites, my deepest and biggest memory from the trip was the ocean! (At the Underwater Tomb of King Munmu) The mighty power of the water element has inspired and charged me with positive energy! Dear KDI School, Go marp seup ni da for this awesome experience!

MARY GRACE FLORES (2012 MDP, Philippines)
Even though South Korea has undertaken many challenges in the process of modernization and economic growth, I was very impressed on how the Korean people were able to preserve and protect their ethnic and cultural heritage which I believe, along with their chaebols and heavy industries, contributed to the country''s economic development.

AMI OKAMOTO (Visiting MPP Student from GRIPS, Japan)
I find it quite admirable for the Korean local and national government agencies to provide support for the preservation of Korean heritage treasures!

KENTO OZAKI (Visiting MPP Student from GRIPS, Japan)
The KFRS experience has instilled in me a newfound appreciation and regard for the Korean fighting spirit. As the great Winston Churchill said, “Difficulties mastered are opportunities won,” and by overcoming adversity, the Koreans have successfully turned these difficulties into winning opportunities.

The writer of this article wishes to add her two-cents worth:  This experience has reinforced her belief that a nation and its people, no matter how poor they are or lacking in resources, can withstand abject poverty and overcome hardships through the strength of conviction, persistence and strong faith. That they can escape and free themselves from the chains of penury and tribulations just like the Koreans did.
