Dissemination seminar: economic development strategy for CIS countries

From October 30th to November 1st, 2013, The KDI School organized the dissemination seminar on the topic of Economic Development Strategy for CIS Countries – Public Policy and Management  in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The seminar was organized within the multi-year program ‘Economic Development Strategy for CIS Countries – Public Policy and Management’, a tailor-made capacity building program for CIS countries in the field of public policy and management with a 3-year time frame. 23 alumni and government officials from CIS countries participated in the seminar. During the seminar, three lectures were provided by the KDI School’s professors, who are experts and specialists on the issues of economic developments. 

The first lecture was presented by Professor Ji-Hong Kim on the topic of Policy Design in Economic Development, focusing on Korea’s cases. In this important lecture, three experiences in economic developments were shared: transformation of the Korean economy in 1945-2005, Koran economic take off with outward looking development strategy from 1960, 1980, and pitfalls of government-led development and changes in development strategy of Korea in 1980-1990s. In the second lecture, Professor Kim showed the participants on the topic of Korean Industry Development Strategy by sharing the successful experiences of Korean industry development since 1960, particularly how Korea successfully ran the heavy and chemical industry in 1970s.

On the third day, Professor Insoo Jeong presented a lecture on Economic Development and Vocational Training Policy. The critical points in the presentation included overview of Korean vocational training policies, development of the vocational training system, implementing mechanisms, outcome and evaluations, implications and future policy and the other related systems with vocational training after more than 50 years of experiences.

The seminar was completed with fruitful results on November 1st, 2013. The feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of the program were also collected and will be utilized at a later date to offer an even better program in the future.
