KDI School of Public Policy and Management is a melting pot of diversity, where students from various walks of life converge to shape our dynamic community. I was concerned about how I would fit in as a Muslim at KDI School in Korea before I arrived, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a strong Muslim community and a generally accepting school environment. In this article I will share initiatives taken by KDI School during Ramadan to support students and offer perspectives from the Muslim community here.
Extended Access to Dormitory Facilities
The Student Affairs Division announced that during Ramadan, the kitchen and dining lounge in the KDI dormitory were accessible 24/7. This initiative ensured that Muslim students observing fasting could have meals at appropriate times, regardless of the hour, fostering a sense of comfort and inclusion within the campus community.
Rida Ali, an MPP student, expressed her gratitude, stating, "Extended dormitory access during Ramadan made fasting easier. It ensured we felt supported and included."
Dedicated Prayer Room
The school offers a dedicated prayer room for Muslim students, providing a convenient space for daily prayers on campus. During Ramadan, Muslim students utilize the prayer room for prayers, enhancing their spiritual experience on campus.
Iftar Symposium
The Muslim Community of KDI School organized an enlightening symposium titled "Building Bridges: Islam’s Call for Peace, Gender Equity, and Interfaith Understanding." This event, held on April 7th, aimed to promote dialogue, understanding, and harmony among diverse communities. The symposium featured compelling presentations by students Ahmed A. Kanneh, Sadia Nawar Priyanka, and George Lobe, covering topics ranging from perspectives on peace within Islam to the rights and empowerment of women in Islamic teachings, and combating Islamophobia.
Following the symposium, which aimed to foster dialogue, understanding, and harmony among different communities, attendees were invited to break the fast at sunset, symbolizing the spirit of sharing and solidarity with food lovingly prepared by Muslim students, adding a personal touch to the event.
Alabi Abdulqudus, another MDP student, shared, "The Iftar Symposium was enriching. Seeing the Muslim Community's efforts to foster dialogue among diverse students was heartening. I enjoyed the Q&A session as it offered insights into Islam from non-Muslim perspectives."
Muslim students at KDI School have shared their reflections on these initiatives, emphasizing the vital role of inclusivity and cultural understanding. These endeavors not only showcase KDI School's dedication to accommodating the religious practices of its Muslim students but also underscore its broader commitment to fostering unity, empathy, and mutual respect within its diverse student community. Through such proactive measures, KDI School upholds its values of inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, enhancing the academic and social experiences of all its students.
