Fajar Hadi Pangestu is one of many KOICA scholars from Indonesia who was accepted to pursue an MPP in 2022. We spoke to Fajar about maintaining the right work-life balance, dedicating himself to his academic endeavors to complete his research project, all while acknowledging the importance of traveling, exploring, and meeting new people.

Why did you choose to attend KDI School?

Professionally, my job requires me to be well-versed in diverse economic policies. On a personal level, I aim to nurture my unconventional ideas, encourage creativity, and embrace the freedom of expression offered at KDI School.

What are some of your favorite things about KDIS?

I find joy in the atmosphere, the diverse community, the exceptional faculty, and the environmentally friendly surroundings that contribute to KDI School's sustainability. These factors all contribute to the vibrant life I experience at KDIS.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and how did you overcome it?

Being far away from home, and especially from my family, for the first time was the biggest challenge. Adapting to a completely new environment was daunting, but after several months, I've come to understand that every decision has its opportunity cost. It's crucial for me to maximize my time at KDI and strive to derive the utmost benefit from it.

Tell us ONE memorable experience that you've had at KDIS?

My most unforgettable moment was when I concluded my final research presentation. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. From February to November, I dedicated myself to completing my research, cherishing the memorable moments where I injected my unconventional ideas into the project. From the survey phase to data processing, I felt a sense of accomplishment as I successfully concluded my research within the allocated time. This experience affirmed that despite being away from home, I could conclude my journey at KDI on a satisfying note.

You won the 2023 Students Choice Awards as the Class Clown. How do you feel about winning this award?

I think the role suits me perfectly. Aside from cracking jokes in class, I enjoy brightening the atmosphere during casual and informal moments. Bringing joy to my friends at KDI gives me a sense of fulfillment, and it's an honor that my peers recognize me for this.

Lastly, what are some of your most exciting takeaways from being at KDIS?

15 months into my journey at KDI, one of the most thrilling lessons has been the importance of striking a balance between academic commitments and enjoying life. The guiding principle is to 'play hard, study harder.' I often remind myself that we only live once at KDI, but if we make the most of it, once is enough. As a result, I dedicate my daytime to focused study sessions and reserve my evenings for social activities. While time in the library is essential, exploring this new country holds equal significance. Through exploration, we have the opportunity to uncover unconventional ideas and infuse creativity into our research.
