Sojourning in a place comes with a newness of life. When we pack our lives into suitcases and travel across the world, we hope to experience some sort of adventure. I have always believed that every stage or new beginning is a tabula rasa, a blank tablet or fresh page waiting to be imprinted on by all the people we will meet and places we will visit. In Sejong, KDI School’s walls and hallways are familiar to us, and with all the school workload that each semester presents, they could be the only ones we ever get to experience. So today I want to bring Sejong city closer, tucked in words of experiences had, and with the hope that we will touch the grounds of unfamiliar places for memories' sake.

To capture the beauty of travelling and exploring Sejong, I sat down with Nargiza Matmusaeva, a 2024 fall MPM student from Kyrgyzstan and a Sejong Friend. Just like in diplomatic relations, where ambassadors represent states, Sejong Friends introduce the city to the world through their travels and explorations. What are some of the attractions this city holds? Any hidden gems? All our questions and curiosity are about to be quenched.

Can you tell us a little about a few of your favorite places in Sejong? What makes them special, and why do you think visitors should explore them?

1. Ieung Bridge (이응다리)

Ieung Bridge was one of the most striking experiences for me. It is a real architectural wonder that looks magical when lit at night. I particularly liked the number of comfortable places to rest on and around the bridge as you enjoy the fresh air and watch the river flow by. Furthermore, Ieung Bridge is where many music festivals, street concerts, and art exhibitions are held.

2. Beartree Park (베어트리파크)

If you want to enjoy nature, Beartree Park is a place worth visiting. The park has 1,000 different species of flowers and trees growing. The Asiatic Black Bears, the symbol of Beartree Park, are one of the main attractions of the park, as the hill was created for them. About 150 cute bears live here, and it is a pleasure to observe them. It also has a petting zoo, where you will be able to see peacocks and beautiful spotted deer that are always happy to greet the visitors. The arboretum is another amazing feature which offers well-maintained flower beds, trees, rare plants, and animals which makes you feel as if you were in a true natural paradise.

3. Restaurants on Government Complex-Sejong Road

I often visit the Government Complex-Sejong Road, where you can find a wide variety of restaurants. It's the perfect place for those who want to try Korean barbecue. In any of the restaurants here, you can always find it, and every time I come, I get the chance to cook the meat right at the table, which always turns into a special ritual. The meat is served fresh, and you can choose how much and how to cook it. It's not just a meal, but a real experience that brings great pleasure! Plus, I always enjoy how various side dishes—kimchi, vegetables, sauces, and snacks—are served with the barbecue, making the whole process even more enjoyable.

But Korean barbecue is far from the only thing you can try here. I also often order bibimbap, and it’s always delicious and hearty. The combination of rice, fresh vegetables, meat, and egg yolk never fails to satisfy my taste and provides a sense of comfort.

Which cultural or historical sites have you visited in Sejong, and what did you learn from those experiences? How do these places contribute to the city's identity?

4. Yeongpyeongsa Temple (영평사)

I went to Yeongpyeongsa Temple in Sejong recently, and this place was an immersion in an atmosphere of tranquillity and peace. The temple itself is quite beautiful and historically important, as it has many traditional elements that help immerse you in the culture and spiritual heritage of Korea. Ideal for those who looking for great solitude, and those who would like to feel connected with Korean traditions and culture.

One such feature of the temple is the area where people write their wishes on small yellow golden petals. Anyone who leaves their wish can feel a connection to this remarkable place. I couldn’t resist and wrote my wish and hung the petal amongst many others. This is a symbol of hope and faith for the fulfilment of desires, and the atmosphere around this ritual is one of harmony.

Sejong is known for its beautiful parks and natural spots. Can you describe some of the outdoor locations you've enjoyed?

5. Sejong Lake Park (세종호수공원, 중앙공원)

One of my pleasant discoveries in Sejong was Sejong Lake Park. It is the ideal place to relax in nature if you’re looking for one. The size of the park is truly impressive, as it has Korea’s largest artificial lake. Surrounding the lake are five artificial islands, each with its purpose and atmosphere.

Festival Island is one of the islands that is used for festivals and events such as concerts and cultural activities. The best floating stage in Korea is found on Stage Island, and when I am here, I always imagine what the shows must be like on the water.

Are there any lesser-known or "hidden gem" locations in Sejong that you think are worth visiting?

6. Goehwa Neighbourhood Park

If you want to escape the more popular tourist spots of Sejong and have a taste of peace and nature, you should visit Goehwa Neighbourhood Park. This park is situated on a mountain, and to reach there, you must climb some stairs. It is a mix of exercise and hiking. The climb may be a bit tiring, but it is worth it! You will be rewarded by the amazing view of the city.

It is calm and serene and is the ideal spot for those who wish to get away from the noise of the city and enjoy nature. Whether you’re looking to relax during the final exam period or add items to your vacation bucket list, I hope this list has inspired you to get off campus and explore Sejong!
