MIPD

Master in Intellectual Property and Development Policy

Having the history of rapid economic growth and placed at the forefront of IP and innovation, KDI School of Public Policy and Management, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Korean Intellectual Property Office have jointly organized the MIPD program to provide students with the in-depth knowledge, expertise and practical know-how to operate as IP policy makers for development and leaders in the public and private sector.

As the world’s first MIPD focusing on intellectual property and development, its objectives are to enable students to acquire broader and deeper knowledge of the principles and sources of IP law, an understanding of how these are changing as a result of globalization, and to obtain a global perspective and professional expertise in IP and Policy Development.

Academic Goals

  • Acquire broader and deeper knowledge of the principles and sources of international intellectual property law and understanding of how these are changing as a result of globalization
  • understand the framework for analyzing policy making for economic growth and sustainable development
  • Appreciate the role of IP as a tool for development
  • Develop the capacity to evaluate and examine various implications of IP laws and policy for socio-economic development
  • Obtain a global perspective and professional expertise in IP and Policy Development
  • Demonstrate the capacity to write a research paper on IP and development issues satisfying the requirements of objectivity, structure, analytical reasoning and independence

Intellectual Property and Innovation Policy

Intellectual Property and Innovation Policy (IP) Innovation is the key driver of human progress in this age of technological change and globalization. From advancements in electronics, biotechnology, renewable energy, and sustainable supplies of clean water, innovation advances the global community. A sound system of intellectual property (IP) laws and management is a critical foundation for harnessing the creativity necessary for development. Patents, designs, trademarks, copyrights and all other IP rights play an important role in a country’s social, economic and environmental development.

Common Concentration

Data Science for Public Policy and Management 

Data Science for Public Policy and Management concentration aims to train innovative leaders who solve real-world public policy and management problems using computational thinking and data science techniques. Two basic courses prepare students to acquire data science’s foundational perspectives and skills: Programming Fundamentals using Python and Programming Fundamentals using R. After Basic courses, students can choose advanced courses based on their interests to build intermediate and advanced skills or to apply data science skills to public policy and management problems. * Common concentration is available to declare only as the 2nd concentration and the 1st concentration should be from your program specific ones to graduate.
